"9/11 was a failure of human understanding"

These are the words of Mass. Governor Deval Patrick. He's right. 9-11 was the failure of humans (us) to understand that a guy half way around the world could take out 3,000 of our people with our own planes and a handful of pilots. We didn't understand the depth of his hatred and the fact that he meant it when he declared war on us and that he had the ability to carry it out. We didn't understand pure evil until it stared us in the face on 9-11.

Unfortunately, Patrick's words had a different context:

“Among many other things, 9/11 was a failure of human understanding,” Patrick said. “It was a mean and nasty and bitter attack on the United States. But it was also a failure of human beings to understand each other, to learn to love each other.”
He should have stopped before the last sentence.
