Bush Pushes Back

Bush is smart to make it clear that Congress will bear the responsibility for another attack if they don't provide him with the tools to fight this war. As my last post indicated we have been too lenient on these prisoners and Bush needs Congress to fix the mess the courts have made of this:

President Bush warned defiant Republican senators yesterday that he will close down a CIA interrogation program that he credited with thwarting terrorist attacks if they pass a proposal regulating detention of enemy combatants, escalating a politically charged battle that has exposed divisions within his party.

An irritated Bush, raising his voice and gesturing sharply at a Rose Garden news conference, excoriated legislation passed by a Senate panel Thursday that is intended to conform U.S. detainee practices with the Geneva Conventions. Bush insisted on legislation more specifically defining what is banned so intelligence officers would not worry about being charged with war crimes.

"The professionals will not step up unless there's clarity in the law," Bush said. "So Congress has got a decision to make: Do you want the program to go forward or not? I strongly recommend that this program go forward in order for us to be able to protect America."

[...]
"Weakening the Geneva protections is not only unnecessary, but would set an example to other countries, with less respect for basic human rights, that they could issue their own legislative 'reinterpretations,' " McCain said in a written statement. "This puts our military personnel and others directly at risk in this and future wars."
What country would we be facing that wouldn't mistreat our people anyway? North Korea, Syria and Iran will torture our people whether they sign on to this treaty or not. Any country we would engage in war could throw this worthless treaty out the window the minute they got our prisoners.

And it's about time that these people think about the safety of the America people and stop worrying about what the world thinks of us. I don't care what they think about us in France and neither should our politicians. Leadership means ignoring all the critics and doing what is right. That is why Bush is a very good leader and McCain is not. The world wants to play nice but they are in a precarious position and I don't think it would be smart of us to join them.

McCain and the other traitors have a pre-9-11 mentality. We should not be conferring rights on our enemies that they don't have; we can't fight this war worrying about the rights of our enemies. It's not civilized it's stupid. This is why we were attacked in the first place, we tied the hands of the FBI and CIA. This can't happen again because of the arrogance of a couple of Senators. McCain you are not president, this is not your war to fight. Get over yourself.

And BTW, McCain flatters himself by stating that he might loose the presidency over this, it was never his to begin with. There is no way that guy would have won the primary, the south rejected him before and would have done so again. And now, he would be lucky to pick up even NH.
