I had this same problem with my professor:
Middlebury College history students are no longer allowed to use Wikipedia in preparing class papers.I did a research paper on the Emerging/Emergent church movement and used Wikipedia as a source but the professor said that it wasn't reliable. For something like the Emergent movement which is largely an Internet movement, I thought it was ironic that he said that.
The school's history department recently adopted a policy that says it's OK to consult the popular online encyclopedia, but that it can't be cited as an authoritative source by students.
The policy says, in part, "Wikipedia is not an acceptable citation, even though it may lead one to a citable source."
