Today is the day aging baby boomers recapture their lost glory and end another war and drive a president out of office:
On October 5, people everywhere will walk out of school, take off work, and come to the downtowns & townsquares and set out from there, going through the streets and calling on many more to join us - making a powerful statement: "NO! THIS REGIME DOES NOT REPRESENT US! AND WE WILL DRIVE IT OUT!"I noticed that California seems to have a protest in a lot of cities and that there is only one in NJ which I find surprising if there is this great hatred of Bush and the war.
So, I guess Bush is supposed to see that there are all these people shutting down the economy by skipping school and work and that will drive Bush to want to leave office? Or the Republicans, seeing that the people are united against Bush and the war in Iraq, his torture of poor mass murders (people bent torturing and killing as many Americans as they can) and his war on the environment, will come to their senses and call an emergency session of Congress and start impeachment proceedings? Or that the military leaders will realize that the people are united against the war and Bush and will overthrow the Bush regime and put Nancy Pelosi in power? Or the people, seeing how great in numbers they are will start a revolution and storm the Whitehouse and drag Bush out kicking and screaming. Or that some great nation, seeing that America is being oppressed by it's leader will invade and kick him out and take over?
Or is it, that they are really doing this for show? They want the world to see that they don't support the actions of the president and they are doing something about it.
Well, here we have something in their own words:
Are we a long way from kicking out a regime? Yes and no. The current political dynamics that dominate discourse and action are not going to stop Bush from maintaining the initiative. And by de-emphasizing and demobilizing political protest in an election season, as both Move On and UFPJ are doing, real harm is being done.
World Can�t Wait is comprised of individuals and organizations from a very broad range of political views � from people who think the Christian Right has taken over the Republican party, to people who see protest as the only way to influence the Democrats and to create a more favorable climate for the mid-term elections, to people who think that elections are not where the fundamental decision making goes on in this society. But all of those participating in WCW and October 5th feel urgently that without massive political opposition from the people, nothing positive is going to transpire this fall even if the Democrats win enough seats to gain a majority.
Without changing the terms of political discourse from what it is, people who want to see the war ended, who want to see science and the right to abortion protected, as just a few examples - without influencing that we will still lose and we will still be fighting a defensive battle on shrinking ground. The only way we can now change that is for the people to take history into their own hands. If we can do that then things can change very quickly.
